Why trades lose more calls than anyone
You are under a sink, in a crawlspace, on a roof, or driving between jobs - physically unable to answer for most of the working day. Then the day ends and the calls keep coming, because furnaces fail at night and water heaters do not check your hours. The structure of the work guarantees missed calls; no amount of trying harder answers a phone from inside an attic.
And the caller's side is worse. Someone with an active leak is the highest-intent customer you will ever get, and the least patient. They are not comparing reviews at 9pm - they are calling down the search results until somebody answers, and whoever answers usually gets the job. The competitor who wins that call is not better at plumbing. They just picked up.
What the agent actually does on a trades line
The first job is triage, because in your business the difference between 'no heat, newborn in the house, 10°F tonight' and 'water heater making a noise, sometime this week is fine' is the whole game. The agent is built to ask the questions you would ask - what's happening, is water actively flowing, did you find the shutoff - and route accordingly: genuine emergencies transfer to your on-call phone, everything else books into the schedule with the details already captured.
The second job is booking, not message-taking. Connected to ServiceTitan, Jobber, or Housecall Pro, a booked call becomes a real job in the system you already dispatch from - address, problem description, time window - rather than a voicemail you re-type at 6am. That difference is most of the value, and it is the thing basic answering options usually do not do.
The third job is knowing when to stop. The agent quotes what you tell it to quote - service call fees, diagnostic pricing - and refuses what you tell it to refuse. It will not price a repipe over the phone, because you would not either.
The honest math
You do not need a study to price this - you need three numbers you already know: calls per month, roughly what fraction ring out, and your average ticket. Our missed-call calculator defaults to commonly cited industry figures - around $450 for a plumbing job and $500 for HVAC as the value of a won call - but those are editable presets, not claims about your business; the number that matters is yours. If you miss even a few billable calls a month, an agent tier at $197-$397 a month pays for itself on the first recovered job. If you genuinely miss almost nothing, it does not, and we will say so.
The comparison point is your bundled option. Housecall Pro, Jobber, and ServiceTitan all offer some form of call answering, and if your needs are simple - take a message, send a text - use what you already pay for. That sentence is on our sales calls too. Where the bundled options generally stop is emergency triage, on-call rotation waterfalls, Spanish, and multi-location routing; those are the reasons a dedicated agent exists.
What it will not do
- It will not sell a $15,000 system replacement. It books the estimate visit; you close the job.
- It cannot invent an emergency path. If nobody is reachable on-call, the agent can only take details and flag urgency - the rotation has to exist on your side.
- It is not at its best in week one. It gets genuinely good after two to three weeks of reviewing real calls with you, which we do on every tier.
- It will not fix dispatching, follow-up, or quoting problems. Answering is the front door; if jobs leak after booking, that is an automation problem, not a phone problem.
Common questions
Can it handle my on-call rotation?
Yes - waterfall and on-call routing is a Revenue Engine feature, and simpler transfer-to-on-call setups exist on lower tiers. The agent tries your on-call tech first, falls through to the backup, and takes details with an urgent flag if nobody picks up. You define the rotation; it follows it.
What about Spanish-speaking callers?
Spanish is included on Full Reception and above. For Front Range trades that is not a nice-to-have - it is answered jobs your voicemail currently loses in a language it doesn't speak.
Does it work with my ServiceTitan / Jobber / Housecall Pro setup?
Those three are our most common trades integrations, alongside Google Calendar. Booked calls land as jobs with the caller's details attached. If you run something else, ask - the honest answer depends on what your system's API allows.
