What AI actually removed, and what it didn't
The part AI removed is the part that used to gatekeep: the code, the templates, the thousand small technical decisions. Tools like Claude and ChatGPT will genuinely produce pages, copy drafts, and working layouts from a conversation, and platforms like WordPress, Squarespace, and Framer will host what you make without you touching a server.
The part AI cannot remove is the part that was always the actual work: knowing what the site should say. Who you serve, what they ask before they buy, what makes you the right choice, what your prices are - that comes out of you or it does not exist. This is also, quietly, why you are better positioned than you think: the owner who knows their trade cold has the raw material no agency copywriter has. What you lack is the ability to tell when the AI's confident output is wrong - which prompt produced something usable and which produced plausible nonsense. That judgment is learnable in hours, but it is not automatic.
The three honest options
| Option | Cash cost | Your hours | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure DIY with AI | $0-$40/mo in tools | Most hours, including the stuck ones | A site, eventually - quality depends on your judgment of AI output |
| Guided build (our Education offer) | From $700 | Real hours, but pointed ones | Your site, built by you across four 1:1 sessions - plus the ability to change it yourself forever |
| Done-for-you (our smallest package) | From $2,950 | A few review hours | A professionally built site; you pay someone each time it changes, or learn the editor |
Our prices, from our pricing page, where all of them are published. DIY tool costs vary by platform.
The variable that decides it: what your hours are worth
The arithmetic is short. The guided build saves roughly $2,250 against our smallest done-for-you package ($2,950 minus $700). If the hours you would spend - the four sessions plus the real work between them - are worth less to you than that, learning wins, and afterwards you also stop paying anyone to change your own hours and prices, which compounds the saving for years. If your hours are worth more than the difference, buy the build; we say exactly that on our own Education page, because selling a busy owner forty hours of homework is not a favor.
Pure DIY sits at the extreme of the same trade: everything saved in cash, everything paid in hours - including the expensive stuck kind, at midnight, three tutorials deep. If you have genuinely free time and enjoy learning alone, it is a legitimate path, and some people build good sites this way. Most owners who try it ship something generic that does not sound like them, because nobody was there to say 'that paragraph is the AI talking, not you' - which is, more than any technical step, the thing a guide is for.
If you do it yourself, the mistakes to skip
- Writing the site before deciding what it is for. One page that answers 'what do you do, for whom, at what price, and how do I book' beats eight pages of mission statement.
- Accepting the AI's first draft. Its first answer is the average of the internet; your site needs the details only you know. Feed it your real customer questions and your real answers, then cut everything that sounds like everyone.
- Skipping the boring plumbing: your own domain, hosting in your own name, a Google Business Profile, and basic analytics. AI will not remind you, and every one of these hurts to migrate later.
- Letting the AI invent facts. Prices, credentials, service areas, reviews - verify every checkable claim it writes, because it will confidently make one up eventually, and on your website that is not a quirk, it is a lie with your name on it.
- Building it and never touching it again. A site nobody updates rots - prices drift, hours change, links break. Whoever builds it, someone owns it afterwards; deciding who is part of the build.
Where we obviously stand, stated plainly
We sell two of the three options on this page, so discount accordingly - and note what we do not claim: that DIY fails, or that everyone should buy teaching. Our Education offer exists for one specific person: the owner who wants to own the skill, has real hours to spend, and would rather learn with someone watching than alone at midnight. Four sessions, you build it, you keep the logins from day one, and you leave with a runbook so you never have to call us. That is the whole offer, at $700, published like everything else. If that is not you, the other two paths are right there, and one of them is free.
Common questions
Which AI tools and platforms would I actually learn on?
We teach on tools you can afford to keep after we leave: Claude or ChatGPT for the building and writing, and WordPress, Squarespace, or Framer for the site itself - plus the unglamorous essentials, Cloudflare, Google Business Profile, and Search Console. If you already pay for a platform, we build on it rather than move you.
How long does the guided build take?
Four sessions over three to four weeks, with the real building happening between sessions - that is where the hours go, and if you cannot commit them, the honest advice is to buy the build instead. Learning is slower than delegating, every time.
Will a self-built site rank on Google?
The technical foundation - titles, structure, speed, mobile - is teachable and we teach it. Rankings themselves compound over months and depend on competition; nobody can promise them, including agencies charging ten times more. What you will have is a site that is not the reason you don't rank.
